Every player aims to get better at volleyball. Volleyball players do training regularly and develop all the necessary skills to improve their game and performance on the court. But most importantly, a volleyball player should have a huge passion for volleyball as well as strong desire to get better.

None ever said that being a good volleyball player was easy. Actually, it’s not easy. Volleyball training requires massive time investment and dedication. Volleyball players should work hard during practices and do everything possible to improve their results.

First of all, it’s necessary to find out what it takes to be a good volleyball player. When you know what makes a good volleyball player, you’ll find it easy to improve your game. Today, we’ll talk you through the qualities of a good volleyball player.

So, let’s get started.

Motivation

It all begins with motivation. Motivation is a key to success in the game of volleyball. It’s worth noting that motivation is a driving force in the sport of volleyball. It’s something that helps volleyball players improve their game. Volleyball players often achieve successful results if they have motivation. On the other hand, you’ll not manage to become a good volleyball player if you are not motivated. So, it’s necessary for volleyball players to find motivation.

Passion for Volleyball

Good volleyball players are those athletes, who have a huge passion for volleyball. That means that the athletes should play volleyball only if they love the game. You should never try to achieve success in volleyball if you don’t like this sport. If you feel that volleyball is not the right sport for you, then you need to focus on another sport. It would be better to choose the sport that’s more to your liking.

Goal Setting

Volleyball players should set the goals and try their best to achieve them. Once you accomplish your volleyball goals, you have to set new goals and do everything again.

However, the goals of volleyball players have to be realistic. Don’t set the goals that you can’t achieve at the moment.

Let’s say that you have set goal is to win the Gold on the Olympic volleyball game. Clearly, accomplishing this goal can be hard. In this case, you obviously have to go a long way to accomplish your goals. Plus, you have to overcome various challenges on your way to success. That means that volleyball players must be prepared to wait and face challenges on their way. Those volleyball players, who have patience and work hard, have a better chance to achieve success and accomplish the goal.

Some goals may look unrealistic. However, your dreams may come true if you train effectively and have a desire for perfection. So, never give up on your way to success!

Volleyball players shouldn’t fall into despair if they can’t accomplish their goals quickly. It may take athletes some time to get good results at what they do.

Strong Legs

It’s fair to say that the success of a volleyball player depends a lot on his/her legs. Athletes should have strong legs to be able to jump high on the court when such a need arises during a game.

A high vertical jump is incredibly important to volleyball hitters and volleyball blockers. Legs affect volleyball player’s quickness. Volleyball players use the power of their legs to jump as high as possible.  Volleyball players need to jump high to block the opposing team’s attacks and carry out attack hits successfully.

Volleyball players often have to make explosive movements on the court. A volleyball player should have strong legs to be able to start moving in any direction quickly.

It’s incredibly important for volleyball players to do the exercises as well as drills that make their legs stronger. Luckily, there are many ways to get stronger legs for volleyball. If you strengthen your legs, you’ll manage to do a better job on the court and contribute greatly to the success of your volleyball team.

Strong Arms

The same can be said about arms. Volleyball players should have strong arms. It’s incredibly important to have strong arms if you play on hitter’s or server’s position.

With strong arms, volleyball players find it easy to get faster arm swing. Strong arms allow volleyball players to hit the ball with power. And of course, resisting a powerful hit can be hard.

Volleyball hitters as well as volleyball servers have to focus on strengthening their arms. That means that they have to do the exercises that allow them to make their arms stronger.

Ball Control Skills

It goes without saying that the game of volleyball has a lot to do with ball control. If you can control the ball successfully, then you’ll manage to help you team in organizing attacks. That’s why it’s so important for volleyball players to be good at controlling the ball. There are many drills that volleyball players can do to improve their ball control skills.

Team Building Skills

Every volleyball player is a part of a volleyball team. Volleyball players work closely together on the court. So, every volleyball player has to participate in team building activities.

For example, a setter and a hitter cooperate on the court during a game. The main task of a setter is to set the ball to a hitter. And of course, a volleyball setter has to do his/her job in the best possible way.

If a setter knows hitter’s preferences very well, then he/she will do the work perfectly. In this case, a volleyball hitter will manage to carry out attack hits easily and successfully. An attacker should aim to hit the ball forcefully and precisely. If the ball is landed on the opposite side of the court, your volleyball team will earn the point.

It’s important to note that a good volleyball player knows all his/her teammates very well. Moreover, a good volleyball player always tries to help his/her teammates during the game and does everything possible to contribute to the success of a volleyball team.

Understanding the Game

It’s crucial for volleyball players to understand the game of volleyball. Good volleyball players should watch the game carefully all the time. If athletes understand the game well, they will be able to react to the game properly and do fantastic game on the court.

When watching the game, volleyball players should pay close attention to their teammates. You need to know where each of your teammates is located on the court. So, you’ll be able to pass the ball to your teammates successfully when a moment comes.

And of course, a volleyball player should watch their opponents. It’s necessary to pay a close attention to the opposing team’s hitters. You need to see where the opposing team’s attackers are located and try to predict their actions.

But most importantly, you should constantly watch the ball. If you see that the ball is approaching to the opposing team’s hitters, then you have to prepare to resist an attack hit. Try to predict where the ball will go after an attack hit and react to it as soon as possible. This will help you resist an attack.

Communication

Communication is one of the most important aspects of a volleyball game. A volleyball player has to communicate a lot with his/her teammates. Volleyball players have to communicate with each others during the games and practices.

Volleyball players need to communicate to discuss their goals as well as strategies and make plans for the game. A volleyball player communicates with his/her coach and teammates. Communication helps volleyball players analyze and correct their mistakes.

Remember that a good volleyball player is a good communicator. You will find it easy to cooperate with your teammates if you can communicate successfully. That’s why it’s so important for volleyball players to work on developing their communication skills.

Volleyball players should respect each other. If you support your teammates, then they will support you as well. The athletes should support each other and help each other in difficult situations.

How to Block a Middle Hitter in Volleyball

How to Block a Middle Hitter in Volleyball

It goes without saying that a middle blocker plays a very important role in a volleyball team’s defense. The main responsibility of a middle blocker is to block an opposing team’s hitter. In other words, a middle blocker has to do every single thing possible in order not to allow an opposing team’s hitter to carry out a successful attack hit and land the ball on his/her side of the volleyball court.

That means that a middle blocker has to make it difficult for the opposing team’s hitter to do his/her job. Keep in mind that a skilled middle blocker is a big problem for an opposing team’s middle hitter.

It’s no surprise that a middle blocker may need to stop the opposing team’s middle hitter and block his/her attacks many times during the game. Actually, as a blocker you need to predict the game and try to figure out what the opposing team’s attacker is likely to do in the nearest future. Next, a middle blocker has to approach to the point of an attack as soon as possible. After that, a blocker has to take an action and make an attempt to resist an attack.

The truth is that being a successful middle blocker can be very difficult. That’s why a blocker constantly has to work hard to develop his/her volleyball blocking skills. As a middle blocker you should get special training.

What does a middle blocker have to do in order to stop an opposing team’s middle hitter? How to become a better middle blocker? What does it take to be a good middle hitter? So, let’s try to get the answers to all of these important questions right now! Today, we’ll provide you with the secrets for blocking a middle hitter. Follow our tips to master the art of blocking in volleyball.

A Middle Blocker Has to Prepare for Blocking the Opponent’s Hitter

It all begins with the preparation. What does preparation means for a middle blocker? A middle blocker has to start getting ready for the opposing team’s attack after the game began. It’s important for a middle blocker to take the correct initial position on the court first. The middle blocker’s knees need to be bent. Also, a middle blocker has to balance his/her body weight on both feet. As a result, a volleyball player is likely to be able to move easily on the court when such a need arises. If a middle blocker takes such an initial position, then he/she will be able to start moving explosively in any direction on the court anytime.

A Middle Blocker Should Position Himself/Herself on the Court Correctly

It’s crucial for a blocker to be in the right place and at the right time on the court and there is no question about this. That’s why it’s so important for a blocker to ensure that he/she will be able to get to the point of an attack if he/she makes no more than three movements. In this case, a blocker will have a good chance to block the opposing team’s hitter and resist his/her attack successfully.

It’s pretty clear that as a blocker you have to position yourself near the net. Make sure that you will be able to touch the net with your fingers. Obviously, a middle blocker shouldn’t create a big gap between him/her and the net. This makes it easy for the opposing team’s hitter to carry out a successful attack hit. The opposing team’s hitter is likely to take advantage of this situation and hit the ball into the hole with power. If the hit is successful, middle blocker’s team will lose the point and an opposing team will earn a point. On the other hand, a middle blocker shouldn’t be too close to the net. It would be difficult for a blocker to resist an attack hit from this position.

Ideally, the distance between a middle blocker and the net has to be approximately 2 feet. And of course, a middle blocker has to be in the middle part of the court. From this place on the court, a middle blocker has to take steps either to the right or to the left depending on the situation. A blocker can also take advantage of the so called cross over step in order to approach the point of attack quickly and block an attack hit in an efficient way.

A Middle Blocker Should Watch the Game Carefully

You need to know that eye work plays a big role in the success of a middle blocker. During the game a blocker has to keep a close eye on the opposing team’s passer, on the opposing team’s middle hitter, on the opposing team’s setter and, of course, on the ball.

The opposing team will begin to organize its attack when one of its players passes the ball to the setter. It’s incredibly important for a middle hitter to watch this pass very carefully. As a middle hitter you should try to figure out what happens next after pass. Analyzing the pass helps a middle hitter understand the situation on the court better.

It’s important for a hitter to be well-prepared for blocking an attack. That’s the reason why a blocker always has to start getting ready for resisting the opposing team’s attacks in advance. A blocker also has to begin to move towards the point of an attack before the ball is even set. The fact is that an opposing team’s hitter is most likely to start approaching the point of attack after the ball goes to a setter. Thus, a blocker has to watch the game carefully and also try to predict where the opposing team’s hitter will be after set.

The blocker will certainly find it easier to resist an opposing team’s attack hit if he/she knows where the opposing team’s attacker will try to hit the ball. Finally, a blocker has to approach to the place where the hitter will probably carry out an attack hit. It’s worth noting that the blocker has to react to the game very quickly.

A Middle Blocker Should Identify Hitter’s Approach

It’s crucial for a middle blocker to be able to read the opposing team’s hitter successfully. The earlier a blocker identifies the hitter’s approach – the better! After that, a hitter has to make the proper actions in order to be able to get to the point of an attack as soon as possible. If a blocker identifies hitter’s approach beforehand, he/she will be able to react to hitter’s actions quickly and appropriately. As a result, a blocker will be able to resist an attack hit. A middle blocker should study an opposing team’s hitter during a game, pay a close attention to his/her hitting style and make conclusions about his/her tendencies.

A Middle Blocker Should Put a Lot of Focus on Footwork

It’s fair to say that middle blocker’s job requires a lot of footwork. As a middle blocker you should constantly make lateral movements to the left and to the right during the game. That’s why middle blockers have to do volleyball footwork drills and exercises on a regular basis. If you improve your footwork, you’ll be able to do better job on the court and contribute greatly to your volleyball team’s defense.

A Middle Blocker Should Create a Wall with His/Her Hands

The main goal of a middle blocker is to destroy an opposing team’s attack. A player should use his/her hands to block opponent’s attacks. Make sure that you’ll be able to create the wall with your hands. When it’s time to block an opposing team’s hitter, a middle blocker has to jump up and extend his/her arms. However, volleyball player’s shoulders have to be locked. The angle between hand and wrist has to be about 45 degrees. This will allow you to create a solid wall for your opponent. And of course, it would be difficult for an opposing team’s hitter to carry out an attack and get points for his/her team.

Thank you so much for reading this article. Hopefully, you have a better understanding of how to block a middle hitter in volleyball successfully and improve greatly your team’s defense. Practice your blocking skills on a regular basis and success will come to you over time. Follow our tips to become a better middle hitter. Best of luck!

Different Types of Serves in Volleyball

Every indoor volleyball team has a server. It’s worth noting that serving has a big impact on the success of your volleyball team’s play. The reality is a good serve is difficult to handle, so oftentimes it becomes a successful attack hit. There is no doubt that a volleyball player with great serving skills can greatly contribute the success of his/her team.

Obviously, if a serve is done properly then the opposite volleyball team will find it difficult to handle it. That means that when a server does a great job then his/her team is likely to win a rally and get a point. On the other hand, a volleyball team is likely to lose a point if a serve is done improperly.

Training a good server is no easy task. You need to know that mastering serving skills requires massive investment, time and dedication. However, if you constantly work on developing the serving technique then your success is inevitable. Sooner or later, you’ll become a great server!

As you’ve probably noticed, this article is going to be all about serving in volleyball. It’s important to know that there are different types of serves in volleyball – float serve, jump serve as well as topspin serve. So, serves in volleyball are done in different ways.

Today, we’ll provide you with the detailed information about each type of volleyball serve and also give you training tips for serving the ball well. Thus, you’ll have an understanding of what it takes to be a good serving player. Above all, we’ll outline the key differences between serves in volleyball. As a result, you’ll be able to figure out what type of serve is best for you and, of course, this will help you develop an effective serving strategy.

Float Serve

Float serve (also known as a floater) is the type of serve in volleyball that doesn’t involve spin. What is great about a float serve is that the ball moves unexpectedly. In fact, the ball can go either to the left or to the right. That’s why it can be challenging for the players of the opposite team to predict the direction of a ball in advance. As a result, the opposite team finds it difficult to pass the ball after a float serve is made.

So, the question is – how to make a good float serve? Obviously, you should try your best to keep your wrist firm before a float serve. Bear in mind that it’s best for a server to avoid touching the ball with fingers. That means that you should do everything you can to contact the ball with the palm of your hand. Another important thing that you need to be aware of is that you shouldn’t snap your wrist when contacting the ball during a float serve.

Jump Serve

Jump serve is another type of serve in volleyball. It’s fair to say that jump serve is not easy to make. Keep in mind that only highly experienced volleyball players can master this difficult serving technique. So, it will certainly take you some time to succeed in jump serve. It’s important to point out that the serve of this type is recommended to taller volleyball players and athletes with a high volleyball jump.

It’s important to note that this type of serve is all about taking advantage of an attack approach. In fact, jump serve is very similar to a back row attack. The job of a server is to toss the ball in the air, jump high and, of course, strike the ball. Plus, the ball should be stricken at the height of a jump.

A server can also try to benefit from an extra motion and this will allow him/her to hit the ball more forcefully. By doing this, a server will be able to make it harder for the opposite team to handle the serve. On the other hand, making an extra motion may also negatively affect your serve and result in some serving errors. When contacting the ball you should do everything you can to snap your wrist. By doing this, you’ll be able to achieve maximum spin and maximum torque. So, you are likely to make your jump serve more effective.

It’s crucial for you to know that the success of a jump serve largely depends on your forward arm motion. That means that you obviously need to work on the arm swing if you would like to have a good jump serve.

As previously mentioned, jump serve is not easy to master. However, if you learn how to make a good jump serve then you’ll be able to provide your team with a very important advantage. The reality is jump serve is not easy to handle for the opposite team. Remember, a player who can make a good jump serve is a good addition to any volleyball team.

If you would like to get the most out of the jump serve and get easy points for your team then you should definitely practise this serving technique regularly over a long period of time. In other words, mastering jump serve has to be a key part of your volleyball training program. When trying to master jump serve you also need to pay a close attention to such important three aspects as tossing the ball, jumping and hitting the ball in the air.

What are key differences between float and jump serves? Actually, it’s one of common questions volleyball coaches get from beginner serving players. We are here to help you find the correct answer to this interesting and important question. It’s important to know that you’ll need to hold the ball longer to make a float serve. However, you’ll obviously need to hold the ball less time while making a jump serve. As it was mentioned above, you need to toss the ball first. As a result, you’ll get some time to approach to the ball, jump and carry out a hit. That’s the biggest difference between two serving techniques.

Topspin Serve

A lot of serving players also choose to make a topspin serve. A topspin serve is best known for its quick speed. Obviously, it is very difficult for the opposite team to handle the serve especially if the ball is served at high speed. It’s important for you to know that a volleyball player has to take several steps to make the perfect topspin serve.

First of all, you need to toss the ball. While tossing your job is to add spin to the ball. You can do this easily by rolling your fingers toward yourself. Keep in mind that if you add spin to the ball then the ball is likely to cross the net and hit the floor. Remember, you should toss the ball with your dominant hand. The next step you need to take is to approach to the ball. After that, you have to bend your back. Now, it’s time to hit the ball. Do your best to contact the ball when it reaches the highest point. It’s best for you to contact the ball with the hand/wrist. As a result, the ball will go quickly in the direction of spin.

There are also volleyball players who choose to make so called standing “spin” serve. When making this type of serve a volleyball player doesn’t have to take off from the ground prior to contacting the ball. Actually, the server doesn’t change his/her position when the ball is served.

And of course, the big question is – what are the differences between float and topspin serves? We are happy to give you the answer right now! You need to know that float serve is flat. When this type of serve is made, no spin is added to the ball. The float serve is difficult to handle if it’s done right. When a serving player makes a spin serve the ball goes much faster. That means that such a ball can reach the target much quicker. So, it can be difficult for the opposite team to handle a topspin serve.

Thank you so much for reading our article. We have just described all the major types of serves in volleyball. As you can see, each type of serve has unique benefits. Obviously, you need to master float serve, jump serve as well as topspin serve if you would like to become a good server. If you learn all of these serves then you’ll have the perfect opportunity to experiment a lot with serving during the game. Practice a serving technique on a regular basis and finally it will become a powerful weapon for your volleyball team. Best of luck!
